Stone Oak Is Where Mexico's Restaurant Brands Open Their First U.S. Door

Between September 2025 and October 2026, three restaurant concepts from Mexico opened their first locations in the United States. They are Tacos On The Street from Puerto Vallarta, Fresh Bowl & Co. from Puebla and Báltico Seafood and Grill, which is modeled on a restaurant in Torreón. All three chose the stretch of US 281 and Loop 1604 that Stone Oak residents drive every day.

For anyone who lives nearby, these are the American versions of each concept. The menus, the rooms and the service are being tested on this neighborhood before any other U.S. city sees them.

Concept Where it started First U.S. address Opened

A Puerto Vallarta Taco Stand Moved Its Headquarters Up US 281

Tacos On The Street came first. In July 2025, Axios San Antonio reported that the company was moving its headquarters from Mexico to San Antonio. It planned to open its first U.S. restaurant off US 281 near Stone Oak and use the city as the base for a wider U.S. expansion. It began as a stand in Puerto Vallarta in 1993 and is known for carne asada tacos served with two house salsas, a creamy avocado verde and a tomato cruda. Tortillas are pressed daily. Joel Mozersky, who designed Pullman Market and Brasserie Mon Chou Chou at Pearl, led the interior. The restaurant also brought Van Leeuwen ice cream to San Antonio for the first time.

The opening was planned for August and came a little later. Community Impact reported that the doors opened Sept. 4, 2025, at 22026 Hwy. 281 N. The chain already had several locations in Mexico. The company's marketing director explained the choice of city in one line:

"San Antonio felt like the natural place to begin our growth in the U.S. It's a city that lives and breathes flavor, family and culture." — Natalia Bustamante, Tacos On The Street

That quote names culture as the reason. None of the coverage cites customer data or investor considerations. In the company's own words, the choice was about fit.

Puebla's Build-Your-Own Bowl, Reworked for Loop 1604

A year later, the second concept opened a few miles east. Fresh Bowl & Co. opened Sept. 18, 2026, at La Arcata Retail Center, 115 N. Loop 1604 E., serving customizable bowls, salads and wraps. The brand name is new, founded in 2025. The company says the model behind it comes from more than 15 years of running Salad Bowl, a Puebla concept where guests choose a base, protein, vegetables, toppings and dressing. Salad Bowl has four locations in Mexico, which makes the Stone Oak store the first U.S. location tied to the concept.

Monica García Perdomo, Juan Carlos Haces and Javier Menéndez Pandal have been named among the people who brought the concept here. In the company's announcement, Menéndez called the opening a way "to bring something we have spent years developing in Mexico to the community we now call home." The phrase "now call home" matters here. Like the Tacos On The Street team, the Fresh Bowl founders are describing a home base, not a satellite store.

One Building, Three Countries

The third arrival shows how quickly this corridor turns over. The address 402 N. Loop 1604 W. was home to Eggspectation, the Canada-based all-day breakfast chain, which closed in March 2026. Báltico Seafood and Grill has now taken over the space. Its soft opening ran Oct. 1 through Oct. 4, according to the San Antonio Express-News. In a single building, one international concept has replaced another, with a Canadian breakfast menu giving way to a Mexican seafood menu inside a year.

Báltico takes its name and inspiration from a restaurant in Torreón, and its website promises "an elevated Mexican seafood experience." The menu covers a lot of seafood:

  • A campechano cocktail with shrimp, clams, octopus and squid
  • Fish ceviche with cilantro, avocado and serrano chili, plus octopus chicharrón
  • A shrimp list with eight preparations, including chipotle, mole, coconut and shrimp wrapped in cheese and bacon
  • A "four seas taco" filled with octopus, squid, shrimp and tuna
  • Charcoal-fired pizzas, including one with salmon, capers and red onion

The Express-News places Báltico in a citywide wave of new mariscos restaurants. What sets this one apart is its Torreón inspiration and its address on the Loop.

The Traffic Runs in Both Directions

The same weeks also brought a departure. The Old English Tea Shoppe on Stone Oak Parkway announced that it would close permanently on Sunday, Oct. 4, because co-owners Sandra and Peter Marley are returning to the United Kingdom for what the restaurant called "circumstances beyond their control," as KSAT reported. The shop opened in 2023 to offer what it called the "REAL English experience." It was the idea of Sandra's brother, Robb Kelly, and she and her husband helped open it. In their farewell post, the owners thanked guests who had "celebrated special occasions with us." The business has been advertised for sale to a new owner.

Taken together, these stories describe a corridor where owners and concepts from other countries arrive, settle in and sometimes go back home. A neighborhood on a major highway loop that draws founders from Puerto Vallarta, Puebla, Torreón and England is working as an international crossroads. On paper, though, it is mostly read as a suburb.

What Opens Next, and When

The next round is mostly a 2027 story. Stone Oak Mercantile is a 57,000-square-foot project at Evans Road and Stone Oak Parkway. KSAT reported in September that construction should finish in December 2026, with tenants opening through 2027. The announced tenants are Box St. All Day, expected around mid-2027, along with Paris Baguette in its first Far North Side location, Crust Pizza Co. and Black Rock Coffee. Crust Pizza Co. has given its planned address as 20135 Stone Oak Parkway, Suite 130. Construction is expected to start in November and finish by May 2027. The listed operators are Derek Campbell, Nathan Robbins and Jay Tompkins.

Closer to now, Katerina Restaurant & Bar opened in February 2026 at 18740 Stone Oak Parkway, in the former Frida space. The San Antonio Current describes its menu as upscale Americana with wood-fired pizza. Muck & Fuss, a burger concept from New Braunfels, announced a location at 2422 N. Loop 1604 W., near Bitters and Rogers Ranch. In March, the owners were aiming for a fall opening without a firm date. Check before you go.

Getting to many of these places means driving through the city's District 9 Stone Oak mobility project. It includes intersection work at Stone Oak Parkway, Evans Road and Hardy Oak. The City says to expect intermittent lane closures, with two-way traffic maintained. The City's project page currently estimates construction from fall 2025 through winter 2028. That is later than the winter 2027 completion Community Impact reported in April 2025.
